German Council for Sustainable Development praises Belarus' SDG efforts

MINSK, 31 January (BelTA) – The German Council for Sustainable Development praises Belarus' efforts in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), General Secretary of the German Council for Sustainable Development Gunther Bachmann said at the meeting with Marianna Shchetkina, Deputy Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic, National Coordinator for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, on 31 January, BelTA learned from the press service of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament.

“Speaking at the meeting with the Belarusian delegation that is on a visit to Germany, Gunther Bachmann praised Belarus' efforts in the development of a system to supervise the achievement of SDGs,” the press service stressed. In his words, Germany shows interest in Belarus' sustainable development policy.

For her part, Marianna Shchetkina informed the German colleagues of the work carried out by Belarus to achieve the SDGs and thanked them for sharing their experience in the field of sustainable development. “Our delegation includes the heads of sectoral groups of the Council For Sustainable Development who would like to thoroughly discuss the best practices of sustainable development in their areas of expertise with their counterparts from Germany. These partner relations are very important to us,” she stressed.

The participants of the meeting discussed the activities of the German Council for Sustainable Development, the sustainable development of the regions, and the role of the regional network of centers for sustainable development.

The Belarusian MPs are in Germany on a visit from 28 January to 1 February. The delegation comprises Chairperson of the Council of the Republic's permanent commission on legislation and state construction Alla Bodak, members of the Council for Sustainable Development, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the head of the UNDP project. The visit is meant to promote Belarus-Germany cooperation, exchange experience in achieving the SDGs, and expand interparliamentary contacts with the assistance of the UNDP and Germany's Support Program for Belarus.
