France embassy defends search of Belarusian ice hockey players in Paris

MINSK, 5 May (BelTA) – Belarusian ice hockey players were searched in line with effective rules and regulations, representatives of the Embassy of France in Belarus told BelTA.

According to the source, officers of the French customs service searched the Belarusian ice hockey team at the Gare Montparnasse railway station in Paris on 3 May 2017 upon request of the city prosecution service. The search procedure was carried out in line with effective rules and regulations and ended without an incident. The search procedure was done in presence of the police officers, who were there to take care of security of the Belarusian team during their stay in Paris.

Representatives of the Embassy of France in Belarus pointed out that France has been at the forefront of the fight against doping in high-performance sport for a long time as part of the World Anti-Doping Agency, the European Union, and the Council of Europe. The efforts are compliant with goals set by the International Olympic Committee and major international sport federations.

According to the source, multiple control procedures are performed during major sport events in France, including world and European cups and championships. The work is not meant to harm any country. Instead it is supposed to encourage honesty and proper ethics in sports, stressed representatives of the Embassy of France in Belarus.
