European Union welcomes measures to improve investment climate in Belarus

MINSK, 29 September (BelTA) – The European Union welcomes the measures the Belarusian government is taking to improve the investment climate in the country. The statement was made by Vassilis Maragos, Head of Unit at the Directorate-General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations in the European Commission, during the Broadening the Horizons: Investment, Finance, Development forum in Minsk on 29 September, BelTA has learned.

According to the European Commission representative, Belarus has taken serious steps on the way of strategic reforms to improve terms of attracting investments and encourage entrepreneurship. The country has been improving its standing in the Doing Business rating for several years now. “We see that Belarus continues improving the situation. The matter is discussed today between the IMF and the Belarusian government. We look at the future of these processes with optimism,” he said.

With UN assistance the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development works to support Belarus in the development of business services, bolstering the competitive ability of the national economy.

“We also provide support to the tune of millions of U.S. dollars in regions of the country for the sake of improving energy effectiveness. The work is in progress in Polotsk, Braslav, and Novogrudok. We participate in power engineering projects in Belarus. We are confident that projects to support young Belarusians will produce effect as well,” said the European Commission representative.
