European MPs asked to keep preparations for tour to Belarusian nuclear power plant private

MINSK, 12 April (BelTA) – The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it received a request from a group of members of the European Parliament (MEPs) for assistance with organizing a visit to Belarus to discuss matters related to the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP). Dmitry Mironchik, Head of the Information Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the statement as he commented on media reports claiming that the Belarusian side refused to receive a group of MEPs willing to visit Belarus to get updated on the status of the BelNPP project.

“We did get a request from a group of members of the European Parliament for assistance with the organization of a visit to Belarus. The MEPs asked for meetings at the House of Representatives of the National Assembly and the Energy Ministry. They also asked us to arrange a visit to Ostrovets and the BelNPP construction site. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now working on it, bearing in mind that the organization of such visits takes some time,” Dmitry Mironchik said.

“We believe it is unacceptable to reveal details of the talks on the organization of the visit before the consultations are over and publicly interpret our proposals as a refusal to cooperate. Such actions of the members of the European Parliament give reason to doubt the sincerity of their intentions and readiness for a constructive and respectful dialogue with the Belarusian side,” Dmitry Mironchik added.
