EU ready to open new chapter in relations with Belarus

MINSK, 21 November (BelTA) – The EU member states would like to open a new chapter in the relations with Belarus, Chairman of the Political and Security Committee of the Council of the European Union Walter Stevens said at the meeting with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on 21 November.

The diplomat noted that last year the European Union and Belarus intensified relations across a number of initiatives, including in the political, trade and economic areas. “We wish to outline priorities of our partnership that will start a new chapter in our relations,” Walter Stevens stressed.

The Chairman of the Committee added that the EU looks forward to Belarus' presidency in the Central European Initiative in 2017. “This will provide a chance for further development of constructive cooperation,” he noted.

As BelTA reported earlier, an EU delegation comprising representatives of the Political and Security Committee of the EU Council, the European External Action Service and the European Commission is on a visit to Belarus on 20-21 November. The delegation has arrived in the country to hold a number of meetings and discuss the status and prospects of cooperation between Belarus and the European Union.
