Elections to local councils of deputies in progress in Belarus

MINSK, 18 February (BelTA) – Elections to the 28th convocation municipal councils of deputies are in progress in Belarus today, BelTA has learned.

As many as 22,200 people stand as candidates, vying for slightly more than 18,000 seats in the local councils of deputies.

As many as 5,870 polling stations have been set up to take the nation's votes, including 250 ones in sanatoriums, health resorts, hospitals, and other in-patient healthcare institutions. As many as 17 polling stations have been opened in units of the Belarusian army.

As many as 6,929,525 Belarusians are on the voter lists.

The election campaign is monitored by 28,624 domestic observers, including representatives of political parties, public associations, and individual companies. Apart from that, the Central Election Commission of Belarus has accredited 46 international observers, who work for the diplomatic missions operating in Belarus. The embassies of Lithuania, Russia, and the USA have sent the largest numbers of observers.
