Elections 2016. No grounds found to satisfy complaints about Belarusian parliament election results

MINSK, 29 September (BelTA) – The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus has found no grounds to satisfy two complaints about results of the latest Belarusian parliament elections. The relevant matters were discussed during the CEC session on 29 September, BelTA has learned.

The decision of the Belarusian election organization agency on the matter is final.

Speaking about the content of the complaints, which were submitted in the course of elections to the lower chamber of the Belarus parliament, Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina stated that the complainants had been laboring under the illusion that it is possible to invalidate election results at a specific polling station. “It is not possible to invalidate election results at one polling station. We can only invalidate election results in a constituency,” she explained.

According to the official, observers and former candidates often fail to understand that polling stations count only votes while results are summed up at the level of the constituency because an MP has to be elected by a constituency, not a polling station. “It is the main error we can see in complaints and requests received during the latest election campaign,” concluded Lidia Yermoshina.
