Elections 2016. Lebedev: Election campaign in Belarus is calm

MINSK, 30 August (BelTA) – The election campaign in Belarus is calm, practically without violations, head of the CIS election observation mission Sergei Lebedev told media on 30 August, BelTA has learned.

“The election campaign proceeds without major violations. We have registered a few cases of torn-off posters and campaign materials in some places. We, however, view such cases more as street crime rather than some competitive fighting,” Sergei Lebedev noted.

The mission has been closely monitoring the coverage of the election campaign in mass media. “We see that candidates are provided with the opportunity to speak on the radio in the morning and make televised statements in the evening. Unfortunately, not everyone makes the full use of these opportunities. The same is true about campaign materials. There is an impression that some of the candidates are too active with billboard information and appearance in mass media while others are less visible. It is difficult to assess the reasons: perhaps, there are financial or personal motives here,” Sergei Lebedev explained.

“We are satisfied with the ongoing parliamentary campaign. We speak openly about it. We regularly publish our bulletins. We will continue our work through the voting day,” he added.
