Elections 2016. Around 20 parliamentary candidates withdraw from election race

MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) – Some 20 candidates to the House of Representatives of the Belarusian parliament have withdrawn from the election race, Secretary of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Nikolai Lozovik told BelTA.

Initially, the number of registered parliamentary candidates stood at 521. Another four candidates were registered later by the decision of district election commissions. “Nineteen candidates have withdrawn from the race. We have been informed that one more candidate has decided to drop out of the elections. However, we do not have precise information regarding the matter yet,” Nikolai Lozovik said.

As a result, more than 500 candidates are running for 110 seats in the House of Representatives. The CEC, however, notes that the number still may change.

The elections to the House of Representatives are scheduled for 11 September. The election campaigning is underway. The CEC will meet on 23 August to discuss the organization of the elections to the National Assembly of Belarus. The commission will also review the candidate complaint processing procedure and consider ways to create a barrier-free environment for disabled voters in the regions.
