CSTO members urged to elaborate uniform response to terrorism

BREST, 23 May (BelTA) – The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Participating States should come up with uniform measures to respond to terrorism and extremism, Chairman of the Permanent Commission for Defense and Security of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly Anatoly Vyborny said at a visiting session in Brest on 23 May, BelTA has learnt.

The 14-point agenda of the session includes military and political situation in the Eastern European zone of the CSTO as well as information war on terrorism and extremism.

“Today we are facing a number of threats like political and ideological pressure on the public, first of all, on minors who are not able to properly evaluate and respond to risks in view of their age. We need to come up with uniform rules to counteract terrorism and extremism. All of the participating states should apply the same legal treatment to a terrorist organization (terrorists), so that we could be able to speak the same language,” Anatoly Vyborny emphasized.

The participants of the visiting session in Brest will discuss the CSTO model law “Concerning information war on terrorism and extremism”. The model law was elaborated by Belarusian experts. “It sets out a general concept and approach to harmonizing the laws of our countries. We have completed preparations and fulfilled procedural requirements. The model code has been approved by all the CSTO member states. It meets national interests of each participating state,” Chairman of the Permanent Commission for National Security of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Valentin Mikhnevich said.

The MPs will study another two model draft laws. After they are approved by the Permanent Commission for Defense and Security, they will be forwarded to the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly Council.

The participants of the session will visit a border crossing, meet with border guards and tour one of border posts.
