Contact group on Ukraine in Minsk vows to enforce timeless ceasefire

MINSK, 4 October (BelTA) – The trilateral contact group on resolving the situation in Ukraine's east will continue doing its utmost to ensure the timeless ceasefire regime, BelTA learned from the OSCE's special representative in the trilateral contact group Martin Sajdik on 4 October.

According to Martin Sajdik, in the period since the latest negotiations the number of ceasefire violations in the conflict zone has remained considerably lower than the number registered before the ceasefire was enforced on the occasion of the new academic year. “Thanks to the latest armistice and ‘the harvest armistice', which the trilateral contact group on Ukraine agreed at the beginning of the summer, the number of civilian casualties has been dropping steadily and noticeably since June. According to the UN data, September saw the lowest number of civilian victims on record — two dead and 16 injured,” noted the diplomat.

“Unfortunately, we cannot say that the overall situation in the conflict zone is stable, this is why the trilateral contact group on Ukraine will continue doing its utmost to secure the timeless ceasefire regime in the future,” stressed the OSCE special representative.

Martin Sajdik was convinced that joint efforts are extremely important for reaching this goal while the OSCE's special monitoring mission to Ukraine represents an inalienable and irreplaceable part of the peaceful resolution process. “This is why it is important to avoid any public debates, which can cast doubt on the reliable and constructive work of the mission,” said Martin Sajdik.
