Contact group on Ukraine in Minsk agrees on ceasefire as from 24 June

MINSK, 21 June (BelTA) – The trilateral contact group on resolving the situation in Ukraine's east has reached an agreement on ceasefire as from 24 June, BelTA learned from the OSCE's special representative in the trilateral contact group on Ukraine Martin Sajdik.

Martin Sajdik said: “Participants of the subgroup [on security] came up with a proposal for the so-called harvest ceasefire. Thus, complete ceasefire will be enforced along the entire contact line for the duration of the harvest campaign — from 24 June through 31 August. The initiative was certainly backed at the level of the trilateral contact group. Participants agreed to forward the proposal to their political superiors.”

The OSCE representative also mentioned a serious incident when personnel of the OSCE special monitoring mission to Ukraine had been attacked and shot at the day before. Such things are inadmissible, stressed Martin Sajdik. “Obviously, all the parties bear responsibility for the safety and freedom of travel of the mission's personnel. In addition to taking prompt response measures they should confirm their adherence to the principle at the top political level. Supporting the initiative of the subgroup on security, today I brought up the issue before the trilateral contact group and await an adequate response from all the parties,” said Martin Sajdik.
