CIS to strengthen cooperation in security

MINSK, 28 September (BelTA) – The CIS member states intend to strengthen cooperation in security, CIS Executive Secretary, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee Sergei Lebedev told media on 28 September, BelTA has learned.

The ways to develop partnership and strengthen cooperation in security will be discussed at the international workshop conference celebrating the 25th anniversary of the CIS on 28 September.

“We have been recently concerned with security matters in our countries. Today the Academy of the Interior Ministry of Belarus will gather representatives of law-enforcement bodies responsible for this area of cooperation to discuss our common security,” noted Sergei Lebedev.

Participants of the conference are expected to assess the results of cooperation in the CIS, including in the economic, humanitarian, sci-tech and cultural areas and discuss development prospects of the Commonwealth.

Sergei Lebedev also stressed that the CIS was the platform that gave rise to new integration associations: the Customs Union and the Eurasian Economic Union. “We can see that, despite all the difficulties, the Eurasian Economic Union is getting stronger. Regular meetings provide an opportunity for experts to discuss the ways to strengthen the cooperation within it,” he added.

The international workshop conference entitled as 25th Anniversary of the Commonwealth of Independent States: Results and Prospects is taking place in Minsk on 28-29 September. Partaking in the conference are over 200 representatives of the CIS member states: members of government bodies, diplomatic missions accredited in Belarus, ambassadors and CIS plenipotentiaries, representatives of the CIS bodies and basic organizations, members of the Commission of Economic Affairs under the CIS Economic Council, heads of the biggest scientific and education institutions, leading scientists and specialists, cultural figures. The Minsk conference will summarize the results of the CIS' 25-year activity and work out recommendations to enhance the efficiency of the Commonwealth.

The forum will include four sections highlighting economic cooperation and improvement of the legal basis in the CIS member states; science and innovative cooperation in the CIS, cooperation of the CIS member states in culture, tourism, sport and youth policy; and collaboration in security, crime and terrorism prevention. A meeting of the Council of the International Association of Academies of Sciences will also be held as part of the forum.
