CIS presidents to crack down on money laundering

MOSCOW, 9 October (BelTA) – A session of the CIS Heads of State Council will take place in the Russian city of Sochi on 11 October, the Kremlin press service told BelTA.

The presidents of Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan are expected to take part in the summit. Due to the forthcoming presidential election Kyrgyzstan will be represented by a prime minister. The level of Ukraine's possible participation is still unclear.

The agenda will include matters concerning the development of cooperation in the CIS space in economic affairs, law enforcement, military, cultural, and humanitarian affairs. The CIS leaders are also expected to discuss a number of topical regional problems.

Results of one year of efforts meant to enhance the performance of the CIS and optimize its executive structures in the year of Russia's presidency in the CIS will be summed up. Decisions on delimitating the authority between the CIS Heads of State Council, the CIS Heads of Government Council will be approved as well as decisions on the CIS Foreign Ministers Council, and the CIS Economic Council.

There are plans to discuss and adopt a number of important documents with a view to advancing interaction between law enforcement agencies. The number includes a concept of cooperation in counteracting money laundering, terrorism financing, and the propagation of weapons of mass destruction. A concept of cooperation in countering corruption is one of the documents, too.

Participants of the summit will also discuss ways to improve the operation of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly and adapt it to modern reality. Chairwoman of the Federation Council of Russia's Federal Assembly, Chairwoman of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly Council Valentina Matviyenko is expected to deliver a report on the matter.

Humanitarian and cultural cooperation remains an important direction in multilateral cooperation in the Commonwealth of Independent States. Participants of the summit will discuss draft resolutions on declaring the year 2019 the Year of the Book in the CIS, 2020 the year of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, on implementing the interstate program CIS Cultural Capitals in Armenia in 2018, in Belarus in 2019, and in Kazakhstan in 2020.

Since the year 2017 has been declared the Year of the Family in the CIS, the heads of state are expected to pass a statement on supporting families and traditional family values.

There are plans to discuss organization matters. In particular, the resolution on transferring CIS presidency functions to Tajikistan in 2018 is supposed to be passed. Russia and Turkmenistan will be named co-presidents and will have to assist Tajikistan as the country with the previous CIS presidency and the country with the next CIS presidency respectively.
