CIS Plenipotentiaries Council, Commission on Economic Affairs to meet 30 March

MINSK, 24 March (BelTA) – The Plenipotentiaries Council and the Commission on Economic Affairs at the CIS Economic Council are expected to meet in Minsk on 30 March, BelTA learned from the press service of the CIS Executive Committee.

It is planned that members of the CIS Plenipotentiaries Council and the Commission on Economic Affairs will discuss a draft agenda for the next meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council in Kazan on 26 May. The draft agenda will include issues related to cooperation in the sector of innovations, transport security, peaceful uses of atomic energy, training of specialists in geodesy, cartography, cadastre and earth remote sensing. The heads of government will also consider documents to regulate cooperation in radio navigation, the fight against the manufacturing and distribution of counterfeit goods, intellectual property protection, and others.

Participants of the joint meeting will take stock of the progress made in the implementation of the CIS Heads of State Council's decision made on 16 September 2016 to adjust the CIS to the present day challenges. “Efforts to further improve the CIS performance and adapt the union to the present-day challenges were launched on Kazakhstan's request. The country suggested a wide range of proposals on the CIS transformation. After the ministries of foreign affairs considered the proposals, the CIS Heads of State Council took the abovementioned decision which kicked off a new stage in the organization's development,” the press service said.

The Heads of State Council decided to continue work on the CIS's further adaptation and instructed the CIS Plenipotentiaries Council and the Commission of Economic Affairs jointly with the CIS Executive Committee to consider additional proposals on the matter.

The meeting will also highlight the progress in the implementation of the plan of action for the third stage (2016-2020) of the CIS economic development strategy. The action plan is aimed at the development of the interstate innovative space, legal and intellectual property protection, interstate trade and economic cooperation based on the free trade zone, the creation of common markets of labor and services, cooperation in the social, economic and financial sectors. The action plan includes 291 events in more than 20 areas.
