CIS observers start monitoring presidential election in Russia

MINSK, 20 February (BelTA) – The CIS observation mission launched its monitoring of the presidential election in Russia on 19 February, BelTA learned from the website of the CIS Executive Committee.

The observation mission will include about 300 members, including long-term observers.

Head of the CIS observation mission Viktor Guminsky met with Chairwoman of the Russian Central Election Commission Ella Pamfilova to discuss the preparations for the presidential election, amendments to the election legislation of Russia, the election campaign and technical instruments used on the election day. Real time video conferencing will be available at polling stations and territorial election commissions to ensure the principle of transparency of the election process. “Viktor Guminsky stated that the observation of the forthcoming elections will rely on the principles of objectivity and non-interference with the internal affairs of the state and its election process,” the CIS Executive Committee said.

The head of the CIS observation mission also met with Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yevgeny Ivanov. The parties discussed the issues related to the election campaign and the organization of the work of the CIS observers. The deputy minister said that they would be provided will everything necessary to perform their functions within the national legislation. Viktor Guminsky stressed that “the goal of the CIS observation mission is to assist the free and democratic elections and that the elections are an internal affair of the state”.

The presidential election in Russia is scheduled for 18 March.
