China's interest in Belarus attributed to determination to secure economic development

MOSCOW, 30 September (BelTA) – Belarus attracts China with its determination to secure economic development, BelTA learned from Sergei Rekeda, Director of the Information and Analysis Center for Post-Soviet Space Studies at the Moscow State University, as the expert commented on the Belarus president's visit to China.

The expert remarked that China demonstrates noticeable interest in Belarus. He attributed it largely to the fact that Belarus represents a stability zone in comparison with the geopolitical situation in Eastern Europe, which is determined by Ukrainian events and the region's militarization by NATO.

Sergei Rekeda said he believes that Belarus appeals to China from the point of view of making investments and using the country's transit and transport potential. He remarked that China shows weak interest in the Eurasian Economic Union for now and prefers advancing bilateral relations with individual countries. “But in the future these efforts will be accumulated in the Eurasian Economic Union format,” said the expert.

Sergei Rekeda also dispelled possible fears of people, who claim that tighter cooperation with such a powerful country like China can lead to the loss of economic independence. “So far China has not suppressed anyone economically. We should focus on economic effects instead of some hypothetical fears,” stated the expert.
