Call to use parliament as negotiation tool in Belarusian society

MINSK, 3 September (BelTA) - The Belarusian parliament can become a convenient platform for the negotiation process in society, Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs of the House of Representatives Andrei Savinykh said in an interview to the ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“Let us restore the good old practice. After all, we have a parliament. Our majority system may become a certain advantage. A total of 110 deputies of the House of Representatives represent, in fact, the whole nation. This universal platform has the practice of working not only with complex documents, but also with inviting a large number of public players,” Andrei Savinykh said.

In his opinion, the society needs a dialogue, but it must be well-structured and well-organized. Andrei Savinykh is convinced that a dialogue should be held on a platform ‘that will sit well with both conservative and progressive circles, cutting off extreme conservatives from the right flank and extreme revolutionaries from the left'. “This process will not suit everyone, but it should be aimed at solving the main public problems,” the parliamentarian added.

The creation of a new platform for public dialogue will slow down the negotiation process for years, Andrei Savinykh said. “It is necessary to include into the dialogue not just anyone, but groups and associations that have legal status under the current legislation, not ephemeral structures. It is necessary to send a clear signal: the authorities are ready to make compromises, but that party should make compromises as well,” he said.
