Call to bolster Belarus-Algeria inter-parliamentary ties

MINSK, 20 February (BelTA) – Belarus and Algeria need to strengthen inter-parliamentary cooperation, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich said as he met with Algeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdelkader Messahel in Minsk on 20 February, BelTA has learned.

Mikhail Myasnikovich described the visit of Algeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs as a landmark one. He expressed confidence that the parties will reach the agreements that will help strengthen the cooperation between the two countries. “The Parliament is ready to solve the most difficult and important tasks in order to develop our bilateral cooperation and harmonize the agenda in international organizations,” he noted.

Mikhail Myasnikovich and Abdelkader Messahel discussed a number of issues, including those concerning the interparliamentary cooperation. According to Mikhail Myasnikovich, setting up parliamentary friendship groups can be a good tool for the development of inter-parliamentary dialogue. The National Assembly of Belarus has such a group. Mikhail Myasnikovich expressed the hope that a similar group will be set up at the Parliament of Algeria.

Mikhail Myasnikovich also called on the MPs of the two countries to work more actively on the legal framework of the Belarusian-Algerian cooperation. Among the priorities he cited the agreements on mutual investment protection, cooperation in science and technology. “They do create the basis for full-fledged cooperation," he said.

The parties discussed the prospects for trade and economic cooperation. The National Assembly is ready to assist its development using the parliamentary tools. Mikhail Myasnikovich expressed the hope that the Algerian delegation's expectations of the visit to Belarus will be fulfilled, and that the bilateral cooperation will continue to develop rapidly.

For his part, Abdelkader Messahel conveyed Mikhail Myasnikovich the best wishes from the President of Algeria's Senate. The minister concurred that the parliaments play a significant role in the development of cooperation between the two countries. He supported the proposal by Mikhail Myasnikovich on the establishment of the friendship group. Abdelkader Messahel stressed that Algeria is willing to expand and deepen cooperation with Belarus.
