Call for faster establishment of currency union in Eurasian Economic Union

MOLODECHNO DISTRICT, 13 March (BelTA) – It is necessary to expedite the establishment of a currency union in the Eurasian Economic Union, BelTA learned from Chairman of the Council of the Republic of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich on 13 March.

“A currency union is one of the last steps in the integration process. We believe that the year 2024, the date set by the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty, is too late. In view of the insufficient stability on financial markets it is clear that we should aim for a closer date and should consider establishing a single payment system, increasing the share of the national currencies in mutual transactions,” noted Mikhail Myasnikovich.

In his words, matters of further integration in the sphere of currency and finance have been discussed with Russia, in particular, with Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev and Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly Valentina Matviyenko. “We said it is necessary to aim for a closer date. We would like the first components of the currency union to start working within the next three-four years,” said the Chairman of the Council of the Republic of Belarus.

Mikhail Myasnikovich went on a working trip to Molodechno District on 13 March. The MP was made familiar with the operation of several enterprises, including OAO Berezinskoe and enterprises of the holding company Zabudova. Mikhail Myasnikovich also visited the Berezinskoye agrarian technology vocational school. Apart from that, the Chairman of the Council of the Republic of Belarus met with people's deputies and representatives of labor collectives in the Gorodilovo rural council.
