Bordyuzha: CSTO has necessary potential to suppress any destabilization attempts

MOSCOW, 2 October (BelTA) – The CSTO has necessary potential to protect inviolability of its borders and suppress any attempts to destabilize the situation in its zone, BelTA learnt from the commentary of CSTO Secretary General Nikolai Bordyuzha on the recent events in Kunduz Province, the north of Afghanistan.

“We have been tracking the situation. According to the recent information, Taliban groups had been besieging Kunduz for the past few months and captured the city on 28 September. The Afghan army has launched an operation to liberate the city. According to the official authorities, the control over the city has been regained,” the commentary says.

According to Nikolai Bordyuzha, such a raid by terrorist groups is unprecedented and demonstrates the intentions of their leaders to show readiness for large-scale military activities.

“The CSTO is deeply concerned with such developments in the close vicinity of its borders, just 70km away from the border with Tajikistan. We view the situation as a real threat to stability and security of the region. I would like to state that as the recent exercise of the CSTO Collective Rapid Response Forces showed, both Tajikistan and the CSTO has necessary potential to secure inviolability of its borders and, if needed, to suppress any attempts to destabilize the situation in the CSTO zone,” the CSTO Secretary General stressed.
