Belarusian printing pioneer's facsimile books donated to U.S. Congress library

MINSK, 20 January (BelTA) – A ceremony to hand over a facsimile edition The Book Heritage of Francysk Skaryna took place in the library of the U.S. Congress, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

The source specified that volumes from 12 to 21 were gifted this time. Volumes from 1 to 11 were presented to the library in August 2016.

The books were gifted by Charge d'affaires of Belarus to the USA Pavel Shidlovsky on behalf of Roman Motulsky, Director of the National Library of Belarus. Employees of the Library of Congress and representatives of the Belarusian diaspora took part in the ceremony.

In his speech Pavel Shidlovsky mentioned Francysk Skaryna's contribution to the development of the global book printing industry. He noted that the national project to make replicas of Francysk Skaryna's books as a facsimile edition had been completed.

Grant Harris, Director of the European Division of the Library of Congress, accepted the books on behalf of the Library of Congress. He thanked the Belarusian side and praised the work that had been done to spread the word about the history of book printing. Thanks to the occasion Belarus' representatives were given an opportunity to get familiar with rare books dedicated to Francysk Skaryna as well as to the 400th anniversary and the 450th anniversary of book printing in Eastern Europe.
