Belarusian government delegation to partake in 16+1 summit in Sofia

MINSK, 5 July (BelTA) – A Belarusian government delegation led by First Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Vasily Matyushevsky will take part in the 16+1 summit of heads of government of Central and Eastern Europe and China, the press service of the Belarusian government told BelTA.

The summit will take place in Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria, on 7 July.

While in Bulgaria Vasily Matyushevsky is expected to meet with Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic. Apart from that, Vasily Matyushevsky will take part in the opening of the business forum of the countries involved in the 16+1 cooperation format and in the plenary session of the heads of government of the 16+1 countries.

First Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Vasily Matyushevsky is expected to hold a number of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the forum.

China initiated the 16+1 cooperation format in 2012. This format is designed to invigorate China's interaction with countries in Central and Eastern Europe (Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Czechia, and Estonia). Six 16+1 summits have been held so far: in Warsaw in 2012, in Bucharest in 2013, in Belgrade in 2014, in Suzhou in 2015, in Riga in 2016, and in Budapest in 2017.

For the last three years China has been putting efforts into getting observers – Austria, Greece, Belarus, the European Union, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development – to take part in the summit. Belarus took part in 16+1 summits at the level of the prime minister in Riga in 2016 and in Budapest in 2017. Belarus' observer status was stipulated by the documents adopted as a result of the Budapest summit.
