Elections 2016. Belarusian election officials told off for crowding vote count tables

MINSK, 16 September (BelTA) – Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina said she is dissatisfied with those members of precinct election commissions who did not allow the observers to properly monitor the vote count by closing off the view with their backs, BelTA has learned.

Lidia Yermoshina noted that she received a photo that depicts election officials with their backs turned to the observers during the process of vote counting at Starovilensky polling district in Minsk. She believes that was a violation of the instructions of the Central Election Commission. “Unfortunately, there were such complaints, even though they were few,” Lidia Yermoshina said.

She added that there were complaints that the election commissions set a three-meter distance between themselves and the observers. That also contradicted the instructions. “Still, I should note that some observers complained about a two-meter distance which was fully in line with our recommendations,” Lidia Yermoshina said.

The CEC head believes that, despite some minor problems, the recent parliamentary elections in Belarus can be called satisfactory. She stressed that there is room for improvement.
