Belarusian diplomat nominated for OSCE secretary general position

MINSK, 14 March (BelTA) – Belarus' Permanent Representative to the OSCE, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Austria Alena Kupchyna has been named a candidate for the position of the secretary general of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), BelTA learned from Dmitry Mironchik, Head of the Information Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the source, the term of office of the incumbent OSCE secretary general expires on 30 June. “We have decided to name Belarus' Permanent Representative to the OSCE, Ambassador Alena Kupchyna a candidate for the position,” said Dmitry Mironchik.

The decision has been prompted by Belarus' sincere desire to make a contribution to strengthening the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in the interests of all the member states. “The OSCE's role is once again extremely important amid acute regional conflicts and escalating contradictions between global players,” said Dmitry Mironchik.

According to the source, Alena Kupchyna worked as a deputy minister of foreign affairs of Belarus for a long time and was intimately involved in the implementation of the country's foreign policy aimed at strengthening security and cooperation in Europe, establishing a dialogue between the East and the West, and resolving the most drastic crisis situations in the region.

“We believe that her knowledge, many years of diplomatic experience and far-reaching international contacts will be beneficial for increasing the OSCE's effectiveness, for tackling the challenging tasks the organization faces, including the most important and complicated one — overcoming the crisis of trust among the member states,” said the spokesman of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dmitry Mironchik also reminded that the procedure to elect a new secretary general has only begun. The first hearings took place in Vienna on 14 March, during which the candidates sketched out their priorities before plenipotentiary representatives of the member states. “Alena Kupchyna faces worthy competitors. However, we are confident in the high qualities of our candidate and hope she will get appointed,” added the Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
