Belarus urges UN to address nuclear disarmament in conjunction with other issues

MINSK, 27 September (BelTA) – Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Valentin Rybakov called on the United Nations to address nuclear disarmament challenges in conjunction with other issues as he attended the high-level meeting to mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Belarusian diplomat stressed that, unfortunately, there has been no global progress in nuclear disarmament for many years. The negative trend can be reversed only if addressed in a comprehensive and step-by-step manner and on the basis of mutual respect. “In this context, Valentin Rybakov called on the UN member states to stop considering nuclear disarmament as an isolated issue, and start addressing it in conjunction with other ongoing processes in the United Nations, first of all with the effort to achieve sustainable development,” the ministry said.

Valentin Rybakov noted that Belarus will continue to promote dialogue and mutual respect in the United Nations to make sure that progressive development in all its forms is prioritized over military considerations.
