MINSK, 26 January (BelTA) – Belarus and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) emphasize the need to continue the international cooperation in Chernobyl-related matters. Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Valentin Rybakov and UNDP Administrator Helen Clark discussed collaboration in this field at the UNDP headquarters in New York, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The parties discussed the status and prospects of the cooperation in Chernobyl-related matters in the context of the new UN Resolution on Chernobyl adopted in December 2016. Valentin Rybakov introduced Helen Clark to Belarus' vision of the next stage of multilateral cooperation in Chernobyl-related matters under the aegis of the United Nations. The Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister pointed out that the practices developed by countries and international organizations for overcoming the consequences of the nuclear accident should be preserved for the benefit of the international community.
“The sides stressed the need to continue the international cooperation in Chernobyl-related matters that involves UN leadership, countries and organizations concerned,” the press service said.
The world will mark the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day for the first time in 2017. Valentin Rybakov and Helen Clark discussed plans for joint commemorative events to be held in April 2017.
