Belarus to promote initiative in UN on fighting trafficking in persons

MINSK, 21 September (BelTA) – Belarusian Deputy Defense Minister Andrei Dapkiunas will travel to New York, USA to participate in the main part of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly on 26-29 September. Helping further advance Belarus' initiative on fighting trafficking in persons is one of the main goals of the visit, BelTA learned from Dmitry Mironchik, Head of the Information Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the source, Andrei Dapkiunas will make a speech during the UN General Assembly's high-level meeting on reviewing the global plan of action on fighting trafficking in persons. Andrei Dapkiunas will also speak on behalf of the Group of Friends United Against Human Trafficking as a movie festival dedicated to these matters opens, said the source.

The Belarusian deputy minister of foreign affairs is expected to participate in a dialogue, which will focus on measures on preventing trade in the underage, children prostitution and pornography.

Apart from that, Andrei Dapkiunas together with Azerbaijan's and Turkmenistan's representatives will open a photo exhibition in the UN HQ. The exhibition is dedicated to the first celebration of International Translation Day (30 September), which has been instituted by the UN General Assembly upon the Belarusian initiative.

Belarus' representative will also meet with top-ranking UN officials to discuss trade and economic matters concerning cooperation between nations within the framework of the organization and other topical matters on the multilateral agenda.
