Belarus suggests stability as common value for global order

MINSK, 1 October (BelTA) - The idea of stability can be a shared value, the basis to build the global order, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at the general debate of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly on 1 October, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei pointed to the need for a global order based on common values. “The bitter geopolitical experience over the last three decades shows that the values must be built on something that is the reflection of common interests. We believe that the idea of stability can serve as such a unifying paradigm. Ensuring stability means reversing the spiral of geopolitical turmoil. Stability implies that the states retain the role of primary international actors, respect for state sovereignty,” the diplomat said.

Contemporary international law rests on these fundamental principles enshrined in the basic documents of the United Nations. “The matter is, on the one hand, about the freedom of states to choose their own form of political government, the pattern and priorities of development. On the other it means non-interference in the internal affairs of each other,” Vladimir Makei said.

The minister noted with regret that these principles are not universally adhered to in today's world and that the policy of sanctions, economic coercion and political isolation against the so-called rogue regimes has become a tool that is often used in foreign policy by some states. “We are witnessing a many-year policy of economic, commercial and financial embargo against the freedom-loving Cuba, which just not only violates the UN resolutions but hinders the sustainable social and economic development of this country,” he cited an example.

In addition, stability means the strengthening of a state and its role in domestic affairs. “We are absolutely convinced that only a strong state can ensure the safety and well-being of its population. We believe that people who live in places where there is no strong power could testify to this more than anyone else,” he said. “If we are truly interested in the global stability, we must not weaken the states but help them grow stronger,” he added.

Stability also deals with relations between great powers that, according to the Belarusian party, should learn again how to listen to and hear each other's arguments, be ready to embrace reasonable compromises.

“In the past it was the great powers that determined the destiny of the planet. In the modern world, they do not have this exclusive prerogative. Still, concordance among great powers, agreement on shared values and the leadership in advancing them are seen as essential to making progress in many areas. It was in the spirit of this logic that last year Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko proposed the initiative to begin a new international dialogue on security. It should be aimed to overcome the existing disagreements between the states in the vast Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian space,” Vladimir Makei stressed.

Belarus is confident that only dialogue will help overcome the major crisis of trust in international relations and jointly elaborate mechanisms to consolidate peace and enhance international security, to achieve sustainable development.
