Belarus suggests celebrating UN's 75th anniversary together with WW2 victory's

MINSK, 10 October (BelTA) – Preparations for the UN summit dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the organization's foundation were discussed as Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Dapkiunas met with UN Under-Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management Movses Abelian during the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

The summit is supposed to take place on 21 September 2020. Heads of state and government are expected to attend it. The celebrations will follow the theme “The future we want, the United Nations we need: Reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism”.

Andrei Dapkiunas stressed the need to properly fill the anniversary summit with content that will allow all countries to make a statement and will allow the heads of the delegations to talk informally about the most pressing items on the international agenda. The Belarusian diplomat also suggested that the summit should be tied to the 75th anniversary of the victory in World War Two. Other milestones relating to the UN history should be taken into account in the course of celebrations in the UN HQ, he noted.

Movses Abelian welcomed Belarus' ideas and confirmed readiness for further interaction. He was also satisfied with how well Belarusian universities train interpreters and translators for the UN.

The meeting also touched upon Belarus' interaction with the UN Secretariat, financial and logistic aspects of organization of various events by countries in the UN HQ.
