Belarus Security Council chief invited to attend meeting of CSTO leaders

BISHKEK, 28 November (BelTA) – State Secretary of Belarus Security Council Stanislav Zas has been invited to attend a narrow-participation meeting of the leaders of the CSTO participating states in Bishkek, BelTA has learned.

This meeting was supposed to be attended by leaders of the six CSTO member states and CSTO Acting Secretary General Valery Semerikov. The ministers of foreign affairs, the ministers of defense and the chiefs of the security councils were to join the heads of state only at the plenary session.

It is possible that the invitation of Stanislav Zas to attend this meeting has to do with the fact that he will become CSTO secretary general on 1 January 2020.

The narrow-participation meeting is taking place behind closed doors. Journalists are waiting for the results of the meeting and the start of the plenary session in a separate press center on the premises of the state residence Ala Archa that his hosting the summit.

The agenda of the summit includes problems of international and regional security, the reinforcement of the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border, interaction with the United Nations Organization in implementing the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, coordination of foreign policy efforts of the CSTO member states, the buildup of the military potential of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, and the improvement of mechanisms designed to counteract challenges and threats, including in the sphere of information security. Events to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 are on the agenda as well.
