Belarus-Russia regional forum to discuss approximation of laws

MINSK, 15 February (BelTA) - Approximation of legislation of Belarus and Russia will be discussed at the Fifth Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia, Vice Speaker of the upper house of Belarusian Parliament Marianna Shchetkina told the media on 15 February, BelTA has learned.

The interparliamentary commission on interregional cooperation of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus and the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia will gather for a session during the forum. “One of the issues on the agenda will be the monitoring of the legislation, the Union State Treaty. This is a very big piece of work and the MPs of Belarus and Russia are involved in this work,” Marianna Shchetkina said.

She recalled that the approximation of laws in the Belarus-Russia Union State was discussed during the parliamentary hearings in Bryansk in December 2017. “It is very important that we see the problems and address them,” she said.

According to tradition, treaties, agreements and contracts will be signed between the regions and enterprises during the forum. “Forging economic ties, setting up joint ventures, joint development of the Union State programs are among the priorities of of the forum,” Marianna Shchetkina added.

Vice Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia Yuri Vorobiev also touched on the themes of the approximation of the laws of the two countries. He noted that much has been achieved but some issues remain. Speaking about the importance of the forum, the vice speaker noted fact that it became a platform for deeper integration and expressed the hope that the forum will contribute to the development of cooperation between the two countries at all levels and in various fields. There is an interest in the forum on the part of the local authorities. The organizing committee has received proposals, suggestions and issues for the inclusion in the agenda of the forum.

On 15 February Minsk played host to the join Belarusian-Russian session of the organizing committees for the Fifth Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia. The Belarusian organizing committee is headed by Vice Chairperson of the Council of the Republic Marianna Shchetkina. Vice Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly Yuri Vorobiev is the Chairman of the Russian organizing committee.

The events of the forum will be held in Mogilev, Shklov and Gorki on 26-28 September. The program includes a plenary session to discuss the priorities for the development of regional cooperation as a key factor in integration and the Union State development, break-out sessions on economic security, agricultural policy, alignment of legislation, and the youth policy of the Union State.

The events to be held ahead of the forum will include a week of integration and cooperation in Mogilev Oblast, the joint Belarusian-Russian plein air “The Image of the Motherland in Fine Arts”, an ice hockey tournament of the Union State spartakiade for children and youth, the youth forum of Belarus and Russia and other events.
