Belarus, Russia in favor of coordinated actions in Middle East

MINSK, 24 May (BelTA) – The ministries of foreign affairs of Belarus and Russia believe it is important to coordinate actions in dealing with Middle East problems on international platforms. The relevant ideas were discussed during consultations between the Belarusian and Russian ministries of foreign affairs in Moscow on 24 May, BelTA has learned. The consultations focused on Middle East and North Africa problems, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

Matters concerning Daesh, the development of the situation in Libya and other countries in the region were also in the center of attention.

During the consultations the Belarusian delegation was led by Igor Leshchenya, Head of the Africa and Middle East Office of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Igor Leshchenya met with Mikhail Bogdanov, Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Russian president's special representative for the Middle East and African countries. The sides exchanged views on topical aspects of the situation in the Middle East. Close attention was paid to coordinating the approaches to resolving the situation in Syria.

While in Moscow Igor Leshchenya held a number of bilateral meetings with the ambassadors of Algeria, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Jordan, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Africa, who have concurrent accreditation to Belarus. Ways to step up the bilateral political dialogue were discussed as well as the expansion of trade and economic cooperation, the development of the legal base of the bilateral relations, the implementation of joint projects, and regional cooperation.
