Belarus, Russia discuss preparations for fourth forum of regions

MINSK, 27 March (BelTA) – A Belarusian parliamentary delegation headed by Chairman of the Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich is in St. Petersburg for the events of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly and the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly, BelTA learned from the press service of the upper house of the Belarusian Parliament.

Mikhail Myasnikovich met with Chairperson of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko and St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko. The parties discussed the preparations for the fourth Belarus-Russia forum of regions, the cooperation in the Eurasian Economic Union, the state and prospects of cooperation with St. Petersburg and other matters,” the press service informed.

Mikhail Myasnikovich also met with PACE President Pedro Agramunt. The parties highlighted the positive dynamics of dialogue between Belarus and the Council of Europe and its Parliamentary Assembly.

During the meeting, the CIS IPA Council is expected to adopt the statement “On the 25th anniversary of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States member states”. The participants will also discuss the initiative for the International Day of Parliamentarism; consider the results of the recent referendum in Kyrgyzstan and the observation during the forthcoming 2017 electoral campaigns in the CIS countries; and assess the CIS IPA achievements in 2016.

The CSTO PA events were held on 26 March. They were also attended by the Chairman of the Council of the Republic. The CSTO PA Council adopted the declaration on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Collective Security Treaty, the 15th anniversary of the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the 10th anniversary of the CSTO PA. The participants discussed the coordination of foreign policy of the parliamentary delegations of the CSTO member states in international organizations, the participation of delegations of the CSTO member states in the next OSCE Parliamentary Assembly summer session, the preparation of the parliamentary hearings on the ways to counteract hybrid wars in the modern context.
