Belarus reiterates importance of supporting middle-income countries at UN General Assembly

MINK, 29 November (BelTA) - The Second Committee (economic and financial matters) of the UN General Assembly adopted by consensus the resolution “Cooperation for development with middle-income countries” on November 28. The delegation of Belarus took an active part in elaboration of the resolution, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The document emphasizes the need to address diverse development needs and challenges of middle-income countries (MICs) and calls on the United Nations development system to support the efforts of this category of countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

In a statement made during the adoption of the resolution, the Belarusian delegation stressed the importance of recognizing and supporting this category of countries where the majority of the world's population lives and which play an important systemic role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The representative of Belarus also noted the readiness of the country to engage actively in the preparatory process of a high-level meeting on MICs in the autumn of 2018, expressing appreciation to the UN member states for the support of Belarus' initiative.

The UN member states supported the initiative of Belarus to convene the high-level meeting of the General Assembly at the beginning of its 73rd session to discuss the gaps and challenges faced by middle-income countries in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
