Belarus ready to provide support to OSCE efforts to settle conflict in Ukraine

MINSK, 23 September (BelTA) – Belarus ready to provide full support to the OSCE efforts in the context of the situation in Ukraine. The matter was discussed in New York as part of the high-level event “The Force of Civilian Crisis Management – Strengthening the Capacities of the OSCE as a Chapter VIII Organization” on 22 September. The event was attended by Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting was held at the invitation of Germany as the chair of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in 2016. Belarus believes that crisis management issues constitute one of the OSCE's core functions. More efforts are needed to strengthen this component, including through defining the legal status of the Organization on the basis of its charter, developing early response tools to resolve crises, reinforcing cooperation with the United Nations. “Belarus stands ready to provide full support to relevant OSCE undertakings in the context of the situation in Ukraine, including Trilateral Contact Group meetings in Minsk,” the press service said.

Vladimir Makei also participated in the MFA meeting of the CEI Member States in New York on 22 September. During his speech Vladimir Makei supported the idea of adopting by the UN General Assembly a resolution on cooperation between the United Nations and CEI. The Minister of Foreign Affairs also stressed the importance of interaction between the CEI and the UN in addressing topical international problems.

Vladimir Makei informed the participants on the conceptual basis of the program for Belarus' CEI presidency in 2017.

The Central European Initiative (CEI) is a regional association created by Italy, Austria, Hungary and Yugoslavia in 1989. Today the organization consists of 18 states (Albania, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Montenegro and Ukraine). Belarus joined the CEI in 1996.
