Belarus' MFA: Makei-Lavrov talks ‘a working meeting'

MINSK, 23 February (BelTA) – The talks between Belarus' Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on 21 February were an ordinary working meeting, spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik told the media on 23 February, BelTA has learned.

The ministry representative was asked whether the talks touched upon visa issues and the migration policy and what the results of the discussion were. “It was an ordinary working meeting. There were no plans to sign any documents or coordinate any issues. The agenda of the meeting included a wide range of current issues,” the spokesman said.

As BelTA earlier reported, Belarus' Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei held a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on 21 February as part of his working trip to the Russian Federation. “Belarus and Russia should approach the 25th anniversary of the diplomatic relations with some real achievements,” said Vladimir Makei.

The minister noted that the meeting “is a great opportunity to talk over the issues on the bilateral and multilateral agenda and cooperation in the international arena.”

The parties discussed the Belarus-Russia bilateral agenda, cooperation in the international arena and international organizations, and also the preparations to mark 25 years of the diplomatic relations between Belarus and Russia.

On 22 February Vladimir Makei met with Belarusian representatives in the integration bodies of the EEU, CSTO and the Union State. The meeting highlighted international cooperation in economic and other matters, outlined the approaches to solving the current issues on the bilateral and multilateral agenda.

“As for the meeting with Belarusian representatives in international organizations, it is a standard format of working trips. Such meetings are regularly held in New York and Geneva where the UN agencies are headquartered. Such meetings have been held in Moscow as well. Yesterday's meeting was part of routine. We are interested in the opinion of our citizens working in the secretariats of international organizations. It is important for us to compare notes and make the right decisions,” Dmitry Mironchik said at the press briefing.
