Belarus MFA: Legitimacy of local elections is determined by people's will, not external assessments

MINSK, 22 February (BelTA) – The legitimacy of the local representatives elected in Belarus is determined solely by the will of the people rather than external assessments, Dmitry Mironchik, head of the information and digital diplomacy office, spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told the media on 22 February, BelTA has learned.

“We have got familiar with the statement of the spokesperson for the European External Action Service regarding the recent elections to the local councils in Belarus. I would like to emphasize that the legitimacy of the local authorities elected in strict accordance with the national legislation is determined solely by the will of the people rather than by external assessments,” Dmitry Mironchik stressed.

“The election law and processes, including their pace, are the sovereign right of Belarus. However, we remain committed to our constructive dialogue with the OSCE/ODIHR and other international partners on electoral issues. It was in the spirit of such dialogue and openness that Belarus voluntarily invited representatives of the diplomatic corps, including those of the EU countries, to observe local elections,” Dmitry Mironchik said.

He added that Belarus intends to continue to adhere to the policy of dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation with the EU on a wide range of issues of mutual interest.
