Belarus MFA calls to work together to overcome global challenges

MINSK, 21 February (BelTA) – For the implementation of the 2030 Agenda we need the UN that can unite the countries to overcome th global challenges and threats, Belarus' Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei at the regional forum of national SDG coordinators in Minsk on 21 February, BelTA has learned.

According to the minister, the issues of sustainable development have an absolute value. However, their most important mission is to assist the public, regional and global stability, strengthen the economic and political cooperation between the states.

The regional forum for the Sustainable Development Goals kicks off a wide series of discussions on stability and security in the region. According to Vladimir Makei, in May Belarus is expected to host a big expert conference on security in Eastern Europe. “These talks will be continued at the meeting of the main group of the Munich Security Conference in the Belarusian capital in autumn. In October Minsk will play host to a counter-terrorism conference under the auspices of the OSCE,” the minister said.

Through the prism of this perspective the value of today's forum is truly unique. Vladimir Makei expressed the confidence that the recommendations to be worked out during the forum will contribute to the development of pragmatic and mutually beneficial cooperation in the Greater Europe, to the spirit of partnership and trust between countries. “For implementation of the 2030 Agenda we need the UN that integrates, structurally and strategically, its programs in the field of peace and security, sustainable development rather than leave them institutionally fragmented, as in the past. We need the UN that helps build bridges between the states at a time of emerging tensions between them. We need the UN that can unite the countries to work together to overcome the challenges and threats to the humankind. And finally, we need the ‘team UN' at the local level that can effectively and efficiently support the states on the path towards the sustainable development,” Vladimir Makei said.
