Belarus in favor of more efficient operational activities of United Nations

MINSK, 28 September (BelTA) – Belarus is in favor of raising the efficiency of operational activities for development of the United Nations system, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Valentin Rybakov said as he met with United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark in New York, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The participants of the meeting discussed the preparations for the quadrennial comprehensive policy review of operational activities for development of the United Nations system. It aims to reveal and eliminate existing drawbacks, raise the efficiency of UN organizations in charge of operational activities.

“Valentin Ryubakov remarked that at the forthcoming negotiations Belarus will advocate for the drastic transformation of the entire system of operational activities of the UN, for the efforts to raise its efficiency while preserving a unpoliticized approach of the system and the leading role of states in choosing the ways and methods to implement the sustainable development agenda till 2030 in compliance with national priorities and interests,” the press release of the press service reads.

The deputy minister of foreign affairs expressed confidence that the UNDP will make a big contribution to the preparation of this document taking into account its huge practical experience.

The Belarusian diplomat also briefed Helen Clark on the results of work of the group of states promoting the interests of middle income countries. It was mentioned that the group successfully held its first ministerial meeting led by the ministers of foreign affairs of Belarus and Costa Rica in September.

Valentin Rybakov and Helen Clark also shared opinions on the process to select a new UN secretary-general.
