Belarus-EU visa talks stumble over technicalities

MINSK, 17 July (BelTA) – A number of technicalities need additional approval in the work on the Belarus-EU agreements on readmission and facilitating visa procedures, BelTA learned from Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei on 15 July.

“We are working on it,” said Vladimir Makei while talking about prospects of easing up visa procedures between Belarus and the European Union. “There is a number of technical things, which need additional coordination. We are working with our partners now.”

According to the minister, they are working to allow the readmission agreement and the agreement on facilitating visa procedures to come into force as one package. “Unfortunately, our European partners would like to add some things to these agreements, which are not acceptable for us and politicize them to a certain degree,” said Vladimir Makei. The Belarusian minister of foreign affairs pointed out that there are no such things in documents signed with other countries, for instance, Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine. Vladimir Makei spoke in favor of enforcing uniform standards and against politicizing the matter.
