Belarus elected to ECOSOC bodies

MINSK, 6 April (BelTA) – Belarus has been elected to a number of bodies of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

During the ECOSOC organizing session on 5 April Belarus was elected by acclamation to the United Nations Statistical Commission for the period of 2017-2020, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women aka UN Women (2017-2019), and the UNAIDS Program Coordinating Board (2017-2019).

ECOSOC occupies the central position in the UN's efforts to promote the three aspects of sustainable development — economic, social, and ecological ones. The Council is a central platform that encourages discussions and the development of innovating thinking, consensus regarding future areas of operation, and coordination of efforts for the sake of reaching internationally agreed goals. The Council is also responsible for carrying out consequent efforts after major conferences and high-level meetings in the United Nations Organization.

The United Nations Economic and Social Council was instituted by the UN Charter in 1945 as one of the six key UN agencies.
