MINSK, 17 January (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei and Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs Margot Wallstrom have exchanged letters on the occasion of the 25th anniversary since diplomatic relations were established between Belarus and Sweden, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.
In his letter Vladimir Makei noted that in the last 25 years Belarusian-Swedish relations have witnessed a fair share of ups and downs. “It is particularly important that in these years we've managed to build up mutual trust. There is no doubt that mutual trust represents a solid foundation for further expansion of Belarusian-Swedish cooperation and joint work for the benefit of our nations and countries on principles of equality and mutual respect,” he stressed.
The advancement of trade, economic, and investment cooperation is a high priority for Belarus and Sweden. “Belarus considers Sweden as an important economic partner in the region. We are interested in studying Sweden's cutting-edge innovative accomplishments in various spheres as well as the experience of building a people-focused society,” the letter reads. “Belarus is open to negotiations on all items on the bilateral agenda in the spheres of politics, trade, economy, and humanitarian affairs as well as human rights.”
Vladimir Makei stressed that general understanding of the central problems of the modern world, the desire to preserve peace and stability on the continent and the world represent a common ground for constructive interaction between Belarus and Sweden in international organizations, including the United Nations Organization.
In turn, Margot Wallstrom pointed out that Sweden was one of the first countries to recognize Belarus' independence. “I hope that we will be able to meet in the near future in order to continue the dialogue. There are a number of matters of mutual interest,” she remarked.
