Belarus draws CIS attention to economics

SOCHI, 10 October (BelTA) – During the session of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council Belarus urged the CIS member states to pay more attention to the economic component of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei made the statement after the session, BelTA has learned.

Ways to improve the CIS' operation, adapt the CIS to modern reality were the central item on the agenda. “Yes, some things are being done, but, unfortunately, we sometimes pay more attention to technical and organizational matters. This is why we encouraged the colleagues to focus on the real deal, to pay more attention to the economic component of the Commonwealth of Independent States, which is an absolute priority for all the member states,” said Vladimir Makei.

Belarus also spoke for finishing the agreement on free trade in services and finishing the documents on creating a common system of government purchases as soon as possible. “Our opinion was backed by representatives of other nations, too. In the future we will pay close attention to matters concerning economic activities in the CIS,” noted the official.

The humanitarian agenda was also discussed during the session, including interaction in youth policy, sport, and tourism. Important decisions were made on cooperation in the fight against corruption and terrorism.

The diplomats also discussed the distribution of official positions between various countries in line with their quotas. As part of the efforts to adapt the CIS to modern reality participants of the session decided in favor of redistributing the authority between the councils of the heads of state, heads of government, and ministers of foreign affairs.
