MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) – Belarus pays close attention to nuclear safety and transparency measures as the country builds its own nuclear power plant. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Lithuania Alexander Korol made the statement in a recent interview with the Baltic Times newspaper, BelTA has learned.
Alexander Korol said: “As the country most affected by the Chernobyl catastrophe, Belarus pays top-priority attention to matters of nuclear safety and the transparent implementation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant construction project. We closely cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the European Commission, the World Association of Nuclear Operators, and other partners and use their expert potential and instruments as much as possible.”
The diplomat pointed out that over 70 delegations had visited the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, including delegations from Hungary, Poland, France, Bangladesh, Egypt, the European Commission, and the IAEA.
“Nuclear and radiation safety represents an important long-term aspect of Belarus-Lithuania bilateral cooperation. In this context Lithuania's active efforts to discredit the Belarusian nuclear energy project at various international platforms make us disappointed and surprised. We are interested in establishing normal work in this area and would very much like the rhetoric of Lithuanian politicians to become constructive at last,” remarked the diplomat.
