Belarus contributes to recommendations on preventing outer space arms race

MINSK, 20 August (BelTA) – Belarus participates in the development of recommendations on preventing an arms race in the outer space, BelTA learned from Belarus' representative office in the UN office and other international organizations in Geneva.

A session of the UN group of governmental experts on preventing an outer space arms race took place in Geneva. The group includes representatives of 25 UN member states. During the session Belarus was represented by Nikolai Ovsyanko, Head of the International Security and Arms Control Department of the Central Office for Multilateral Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The main purpose of the group of governmental experts is to work out recommendations regarding substantial components of the international treaty on preventing an arms race in the open space and facilitating the launch of the negotiations as soon as possible. The development and approval of the treaty will become an important step in ensuring the security of nations and their space installations. It will also allow considerably bolstering international peace and security.
