Belarus consistently advocates for restoring Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity

MINSK, 8 February (BelTA) - Belarus consistently advocates for restoring the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, Belarus' Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said in an interview with the Russian newspaper Izvestia, BelTA learned from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The minister emphasized that this long-suffering country and the region are interested in the speedy peaceful settlement. It will also benefit the international situation in general.

“As for Belarus, our embassy, just like the Russian one, was among a dozen of foreign diplomatic missions that did not stop their work in Damascus even at the peak of the military conflict. I will also remind that Belarus spoke about the in-principle support for the Russian operation in Syria which was started at the invitation of the legitimate government of this country from the rostrum of the United Nations Security Council on 30 September 2015,” the minister said.

In his words, Belarus is keeping a close eye on the processes in Syria and around it, the progress in the talks at all venues such as Astana, Geneva or Sochi.

“We are not just observers. Belarus has an active position at all international forums and consistently advocates for restoring the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. In recent time, we have also doubled efforts to facilitate the complicated humanitarian situation. We deliver humanitarian cargoes, welcome hundreds of Syrian children in Belarus for recreation and recuperation,” Vladimir Makei remarked.

He added that the Belarusian side is doing all that not for the sake of political publicity. Our country is irrevocably committed to the principles of international law, a special nature of traditionally friendly relations with Syria and its people.
