Belarus' CEC in favor of changing election system taking into account national development strategy

MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) – The decision to change the election system needs to be taken taking into account the country's development strategy, BelTA learned from Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina on 17 November.

Lidia Yermoshina believes that the government will be the one to take the decision to move from the majority-based voting system to the mixed one or a proportional one. “Voters will never agree to the change and will not support it at a referendum,” the head of the Belarusian election organization agency believes. In his opinion, the government will have to make the hard decision taking into account the strategy of the country's development.

The official underlined that the majority voting system is clearly popular with Belarusian voters. “They prefer having recognizable MPs they can talk to. After all a political party is something impersonal,” Lidia Yermoshina stated. Yet she did not rule out the possibility that measures will be taken to develop the political system, the political parties in Belarus in the future. It will be impossible to do that without transitioning to a different system, the CEC head believes.
