Belarus calls for optimization of CIS Economic Court

MINSK, 12 January (BelTA) – We need to preserve and optimize the CIS Economic Court. This issue is of fundamental importance for Belarus, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at a session of the CIS Plenipotentiaries Council on 12 January, BelTA has learned.

According to the minister, the experts have already undertaken the necessary consultations and drafted documents to optimize the court. Vladimir Makei expressed the hope that the Council will approve the drafts so that they could be submitted to the CIS bodies by 1 April 2017.

In his speech Vladimir Makei also touched on the outcomes of 2016 which was an anniversary year for the CIS. The year was full of bright and significant events. He thanked the Kyrgyzstan presidency and the CIS Executive Committee for the professional and responsible attitude towards the organization of the meetings of the higher statutory bodies and the events dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the CIS.

The minister also noted that for Belarus the CIS remains a relevant interstate association which helps solve the whole range of pressing issues of interregional cooperation. “The Belarusian President has repeatedly voiced this position,” Vladimir Makei said.

It is symbolic that the work to improve the CIS and to adjust it to present-day realities was launched in the anniversary year, he noted. “Thanks largely to the efforts of the CIS Plenipotentiaries Council the initiatives of Kazakhstan and other countries to reform the organization were well worked out. We preserved the organization and outlined a framework for substantive work to reform and modernize it,” Vladimir Makei stressed.
