Belarus calls for more effective mechanisms to resolve conflicts, wars

MINSK, 16 November (BelTA) – There is a need for more effective conflict- and war-resolution mechanisms, Permanent Representative of Belarus in Geneva Yuri Ambrazevich said as he participated in the thematic consultations in the run up to the development of a global compact on refugees, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In his statement Yuri Ambrazevich pointed out that it was the violation of international law by individual states that had led to wars and conflicts. This, in turn, triggered large movements of migrants and refugees around the world. Therefore, there is a need for more effective conflict- and war-resolution mechanisms to address many of today's transnational challenges, including the problem of refugees.

In this regard, the Permanent Representative drew attention to the initiative of the Belarusian president to launch a new peace-making process similar to the Helsinki process.

A global compact should be developed within the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and presented to the UN General Assembly for consideration at its 73rd session in 2018. The relevant mandate was given by the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2016.
